Waxing Aftercare: Dos and Don’ts for Best Results

Did you know that getting your hair professionally removed is only part of the waxing process? For smooth, hair free skin, you’re going to need to make sure you implement the appropriate aftercare techniques.

Because we love to see our clients happy with their waxing results, we’re going to review some basic post wax care tips so that everyone leaves happy and healthy!

Why is waxing aftercare so important?

When the appropriate aftercare steps are not completed, the potential for skin issues increases significantly. We believe in setting our clients up for success so that they know what to look out for. So, we’ve outlined some common skincare problems that clients who are new to waxing may run into if they don’t properly care for their skin following their appointment!

Prevent annoying ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs are the worst. Not only can they make you feel self conscious, they can also be irritating and painful to deal with. Proper aftercare helps prevent ingrown hairs so that your skin remains calm, smooth, and happy!

Stop lengthened discomfort and irritation

Sensitive skin is something to keep in mind. When clients with sensitive skin fail to follow basic aftercare instructions, they may be left with redness, swelling, or minor discomfort for an extended period of time. Proper aftercare ensures that these side effects are shortened or mitigated altogether.

Promote your healthiest, best skin!

Lastly, let’s be real: good aftercare fosters the perfect environment for your happiest, healthiest skin! Sure, having dry skin following your wax may not always result in ingrown hairs, but why have dry, thirsty skin when you can have soft, glowing skin following your wax? Seems like a no-brainer to us! Make sure to use a professional grade post-wax lotion for best results.

Essential steps for waxing aftercare

Now that we know what to look out for and what to avoid, let’s jump into how we can prevent these side effects from rearing their ugly heads.

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing

One of our biggest suggestions to our clients is the importance of planning ahead and choosing to wear breathable, loose fitting clothing to your waxing appointment. Whether it’s a bikini wax, a brazilian wax, or simply waxing your underarms, wearing loose, comfortable clothing is going to be key to comfortable skin.

Follow a routine of exfoliation and moisturizer

Another staple for waxing aftercare is exfoliation. Although aftercare may imply that you should do this immediately following your wax service, the truth is that you should wait at least a week before exfoliating your skin. Exfoliating ensures dry and dead skin is removed allowing new hair growth to surface without issue.

Book your follow-up appointment 4 to 6 weeks out

Consistency truly is key. If you’re trying to mitigate any negative reaction to waxing, holding yourself to regular waxing appointments will do just that. Additionally, with time and consistency comes thinner, sparser regrowth.

Things you should never do after waxing

Hand in hand with what you should do following your wax comes what you should absolutely avoid following your waxing session. Knowing what to avoid is just as important as knowing how to care for your skin.

Avoid touching and irritating the waxed area

It may be tempting, but try to avoid touching and scratching the waxed area. Sure, waxing can irritate sensitive skin, but touching and scratching will undoubtedly make it worse. When you touch the waxes area, you’re introducing the dirt and bacteria from your hands directly to the open pores in your freshly waxed skin

Don’t go in hot water, pools, or swimming for the first 48 hours

Similar to your hands, hot tubs, hot baths, and pools carry chemicals and bacteria that could irritate or infect the skin. For your safety, try to avoid submerging your freshly waxed skin in water for at least 48 hours.

Never shave in between appointments

While the point of waxing is to have smooth, hair free skin, there is going to be a small amount of time that you will need to allow your hair to grow out. During that time it may be tempting to shave your unwanted body hair, but we strongly suggest avoiding doing that. Any progress toward slower and thinner regrowth gets washed down the drain when you shave between waxing appointments.
