First-Time Brazilian Waxing? Everything You Need to Know

One of the most intimidating waxing treatments you can get is a Brazilian.

Inviting a stranger to get up close and personal with intimate areas is a leap for newbies.

Are you getting ready for your first Brazilian wax and have questions about the process? We’re here to help!

What’s included in a Brazilian wax?

Removing pubic hair is a personal preference, and you’ve probably tried it on your own at home. Shaving and depilatory creams are common tools to remove hair in intimate areas. And while they’re commonly used, that doesn’t make them the best method.

Waxing is a quick and effective method that doesn’t leave razor bumps or chemical burns behind. Technicians are pros at getting all the hair down there in one session, leaving smooth, supple skin.

When booking your first appointment, you’ll get a good idea of what your salon includes with the service. Different waxing styles leave you with a personalized experience. You can either go full Brazilian, with nothing left or leave a strip based on your preferences.

Some will include the butt strip and upper thighs, too, as part of the session or as an add-on.

Many first-timers are nervous about going all in, and that’s totally fine! Technicians are ready to talk you through the process and give you the look you want.

We’ve got all the answers you need to feel confident going in for your first session!

Preparing for your Brazilian wax appointment

first brazilian wax

Heading into the salon for your first Brazilian, there are some things you can do to prepare. These tips will make the process easier for your technician and less painful.

Grow your hair out!

Put down the razor; we mean it. Waxing requires at least a quarter inch of hair to be effective. During your session, pubic hair is removed from below the skin’s surface. If it’s too short, you risk breakage that can lead to ingrown hairs and painful bumps as the hair grows out.

Give yourself a few weeks beforehand to let your hair do what it wants! While it might be foreign to you if you’ve groomed your hair regularly, it’s necessary.

Over several sessions, you’ll have less and less hair growing back.

Exfoliate 24 hours before your wax

Exfoliate your intimate areas with a mitt or scrub on the day before your session. Removing dead skin cells prepares the skin for the process. High-quality wax won’t stick to the skin, but exfoliating ensures an easy time on the table.

You should also avoid caffeine and alcohol in the days leading up to your session. These substances can dehydrate your skin and make it a more painful experience.

Wear loose-fitting clothing

Dressing for after your session keeps your recovery time down after a bikini wax. Your intimate areas will be tender, especially after your first appointment. Flowy, loose-fitting clothing gives your skin space to breathe and repair itself.

Choose something you’re comfortable in, like a skirt or loose pants. Don’t plan to wear panties after your session, either.

Take ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment

Pain is the unspoken price of waxing, and everyone’s pain tolerance is different. There are a few things you can do to reduce the amount of discomfort you’ll feel. Avoid caffeine since it makes your skin more sensitive. Additionally, you can take ibuprofen thirty minutes before your session.

Numbing creams are also popular for pre-waxing. You should check with your wax technician to make sure it won’t interfere before using them. If it’s all good, use the cream ten minutes prior for best results.

What to expect during your Brazilian wax

Now that you’re prepared to head in, we’ll take you through the typical waxing process. Each salon may do things a little differently, but remember, they want you to be comfortable. Talk to your esthetician and let them know your comfort level. They’ll happily walk you through their process.

A comfortable, welcoming environment

Waxing salons are comfortable and welcoming environments. You should feel like you’re about to be pampered because you are! Even though there’s some discomfort associated with it, you’re in good hands!

However, if you walk into your first appointment and feel uneasy with the setting, go with your feelings. It should be clean, well-kept, and designed for comfort. Dirty windows or trash around the space are good signs that you should go elsewhere for your personal care.

Open communication with your esthetician

Estheticians are professionals at customer service and welcome your questions. Before you get down to business, communicate with your technician. They’ll want to know how much hair you want removed, how you want what’s left styled, and any other concerns you may have.

Some people like to have a strip of hair or a triangle left behind. It’s up to you!

The best results come from repeat visits, so build a relationship with your waxing technician. You may spend a lot of time together in the future!

Brazilian waxing aftercare tips

Once you’ve gone through your first session, you will likely have some questions. Your esthetician will have aftercare tips for you. They may also give you an aftercare kit with lotions or other products to help you heal.

Here are some other tips to consider.

Avoid irritating the skin after the appointment

Hard waxes remove hair from the root, and your skin will be tender after your session. Give your skin twenty-four hours to breathe and calm down. Avoid activities that make you sweat, including intimacy, for at least a day after your session.

Don’t go swimming, workout, or sauna following your wax treatment.

Do shower after your session, but keep the water lukewarm and only use unscented soaps. Keep wearing loose clothing for up to two days following.

Exfoliate and moisturize regularly 48 hours after your wax

After your skin’s calm and not tender to the touch, you can resume your routine. Use natural, unscented products when you resume moisturizing. Scents can irritate delicate skin.

Gently exfoliate to remove any dead skin cells left behind. In the weeks between your appointments, exfoliate regularly to keep your skin healthy and reduce ingrown hairs.

Finally, resist the urge to shave! You might see some hairs growing faster than others; this is common. Pubic hair, like any other, is on a growth cycle, and it can take several sessions to balance out.

After about four or five weeks, you’ll want to return and have another session. The benefits of waxing include less hair growth and thinner hair over time. Depending on your hair growth cycle, you might even be able to stretch them out to six weeks after a while!
